I tried to do a drop caps by highlighting the first line of text and using the drop caps button at the toolbar on top. As I increased the drop caps, the rest of the text moved down, but the first letter stayed the same size. Did I do something wrong?

Were you accidentally increasing the "Space Before" parameter (above the "Drop Cap Number of Lines" box)? Your specific problem is confusing, but here's the simple way to do drop caps:
1. Highlight the first word (the one you want to drop the letter of)
2. On the Paragraph Formatting Controls, change the "Drop Cap Number of Lines" to 3, 4, or however many lines you desire
3. Set the "Drop Cap One or More Characters" to 1 (or 2, if you want to drop both characters of a world like "as")

Do the above but first make sure both the "space before" and "space after" options are set to 0.
